Painting Large Landscapes

Scott teaches you how he develops a large painting from a field reference. He demonstrates blocking in the larger forms, mixing the colors, to the final detail work. A gallery at the end of the video features more of his paintings.

Composing the Many Elements of a Scene

When painting outdoors, it is easy to get overwhelmed with the amount of information available. Deciding where to start, what the focal point is, what to leave out, and what to keep, are all a series of small inspired decisions. This video walks you through the “why” behind these decisions while keeping the whole in mind, always working toward that ever-important last 10 percent.

Three Landscape Studies

In the first demonstration, Scott teaches how to combine field studies to create a studio painting. In the following two demonstrations, he shows how to approach situations you encounter when painting en plein air.

Solitary Profession

In the Spring Thaw of 2010, artist/producer Tony Pro and a small film crew visited the studio of artist Scott L. Christensen, with the intention of capturing the very essence of the man behind the easel; his methods, thoughts and ideas were the subject of this instructional documentary. Pro has captured Christensen like never before, in his solitary element, for all the world to see.

Exploring Composition

Inspired by the chaotic scenes in nature, Scott L. Christensen’s “Exploring Composition” video addresses the complexities involved with composing. Facing complications of the scene at hand, and ways of working with intention through these challenges, are significant components of the artist’s success. Unlike other videos in the Scott L. Christensen series, this video is not about a final painting. Rather, a variety of works-in-progress are utilized to demonstrate how ideas develop and evolve over periods of deliberate study. Observe Christensen’s pursuit of the process as he touches on a few of the many methods that he utilizes and believes are important in the journey associated with composition and painting.

Establishing a Key that Reads

One of the many things that Scott L. Christensen is known for his close value structure. To achieve this, it is important to establish an overall key early on that will be carried throughout the painting. Through this video he will walk you through not only blocking in the painting, but also reworking the entire piece to re-establish his key as per the need of the painting. Only then will he be able to work towards finish.
